Course Overview
As we advance our individual woodworking journey our design ideas tend to become more advanced and so too our desire to explore and experience new techniques. The natural progression often sees woodworkers exploring straight lines and right angles first, but as we progress, we often become interested in making objects with curved components.
Curved work can be separated into two broad forms: hot and cold bending techniques. Hot being any technique that introduces heat to timber; steam bending, hot pipe bending or immersing timber in boiling water. Cold bending includes techniques such as: coopering, kerfing and laminating and of these, laminating timber potentially offers woodworkers the most possibilities.
This course aims to be an introduction to laminating timber using simple bending forms. Whilst it may look like a deceptively simple object, the laminated tray project offers a huge amount of opportunity to explore and experience the following:
• Selecting, preparing and cutting thin timber laminations
• Cutting and dimensioning laminations
• Designing, building, and using lamination formers
• Approaches to laying out and cutting joinery in curved components
• Pattern and shaping solid and engineered timber products
• Advanced jig making approaches for shaping lamination and cutting joinery into compound components
• Using jigs to accurately dimension curved components
• Strategies for gluing up curved work
