Course Overview
Description
It’s enormously rewarding to sit anddrink a cup of tea or coffee from a vessel you’ve carved yourself.
In this 2-day class you’ll design and carve a handled cup fromwhite beech using hand tools only.
Carving small objects is a very meditate process, the slowerprocess of using hand tools allows you the time to really understand therelationship between the timber, the tools and the form.
All timber and tools are provided for the course.
Youwill cover:
Design and function
Choosing the right timber and cutting blanks
Tool choice, sharpening and maintenance
Carving techniques
Texturing and detailing
Food safe finishing, including painted surfaces using milk paint,
chalk paint and natural pigments, shellac and waxes and charring and brushing the surface.
Everyone is welcome to join this class, no experience is necessary.
Please wear covered shoes and bring a notepad and pencil.
Younger Members
This course is suitable for younger members of the association who are aged 16 or 17 years old at the time of the course.
Materials Provided
All required tools and materials will be provided for your use during the course. If you prefer to use your own carving tools please label them with your name. If you have them please also bring hand protection gloves.
What To Bring
Tea and coffee are available in the workshop. There is a small fridge in which your lunch and drinks can be stored.
Safety
Please wear sturdy footwear. Closed shoes with leather uppers are requiredin the workshop. If you have them, please bring your ear muffs, mask and goggles for hearing, lung and eye protection.
