Course Overview
Description
This course is focused on the making of a small portable workbench complete with vice This ‘Baby Bench’ is designed to be used as a portable alternative to a full size woodworking bench. This elaborate jig turns a domestic indoor or outdoor table top into an environment for small woodworking tasks and projects. It can also be used to enhance the functionality of an existing bench. The vice can be leather faced to grip delicate finished wood without marring. It is easily stowed in a cupboard or transported by car to make woodworking safer and accessible. The portable ‘’Baby Bench’’ is 536 deep x 400 wide x 125mm high.
Participants will be supplied with a bench kit with 15 pieces of 18mm ply and the furniture for a front vice. They will prepare the elements and then assemble the basic bench. Finishing of the bench with a coat of estapol or similar will be an ‘at home’ option for the participants. They will be challenged to personalise the design by adding enhancements that would be useful for the area of wood working in which they are currently interested. An option for participants is the making of a Mitre Box and/or Bench Hook/ Shooting Board to support accurate cuts in timber.
