Richard Crosland

Born in the United Kingdom in 1935, he came to Australia in 1962 having driven overland to Southern India with five companions.

Trained as a Manager in London, Richard had number of jobs in Australia before becoming "self-employed", renovating Paddington houses. Self taught as a CabinetMaker for several years, Richard formalised his training with an Advanced Cabinet Making Course at TAFE.  So successful was this venture, he then took up a Teaching appointment in that Institution.

Throughout his training, Richard continued making Commissioned Custom Built furniture and in 1978 set up his own Woodworking School which is still running and enjoys a reputation for "fine instruction and successful students".

Richard says "every now and again, I'm inspired to design and produce what I call "mechanical sculptures" such as the Go-Cart familiar to visitors of earlier Woodworkers" Association Exhibitions. The Escalator on show at Woodmasters 2000 is my latest. My principal concern is that it does justice to the variable and beautiful natural resource from which it is made, and that it gives amusements
to those who see it".
