Exhibitors
The exhibitors include well-known woodworkers at the peak of their careers, emerging designer/makers and a number of recent graduates form Sturt School for Wood (Mittagong) and the Australian School of Fine Furniture (Launceston).
Leon Sadubin
Leon has had a significant impact on furniture design and making in Australia. He was one of the founding members of the Woodworkers Association of NSW and was a regular exhibitor in all the early Association exhibitions. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1982, and his work is included in the permanent collection at the Powerhouse Museum. Major commissions include; furniture for Parliament House in Canberra; a four-year project to furnish the house of a client, Joan Abela; chapel furniture for St James Church Sydney, and a recently completed collaborative commission with glass artist Marc Gruneit to furnish the Temple Emanuel Synagogue in Woollahra. Tony Kenway
Tony’s work first came to the attention of the public in the Woodworkers Association exhibitions of the 1980s.
He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship
in 1998 and studied and worked in Japan, Italy, UK and USA. He has since won national and international design awards and art prizes. His work is represented in public and private collections in Australia, the UK, USA, Germany, Japan and Hong Kong. He currently has work at Bungendore Woodworks, Naturally Australian, and the Australian Woodwork Galleries. www.tonykenwayfurniture.com
Evan Dunstone
Evan designs and makes a range of furniture but he is particularly is passionate about chairs. "Chairs are iconic in the field of design and presents the maker with more challenges than any other piece of furniture". He is a visiting teacher at ANU School of Art where he teaches chair design. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2001 which gave him the opportunity to meet and work with some of the finest designer / makers in the UK and USA. Robert Chapman
Robert's work is characterised by sculptural elements and joinery. Inspired by the work of Antonio Gaudi after a trip to Spain in 2001, his 'Barcelona Collection' dining suite has won a number of State and National Awards and received widespread media attention. The Australian Government recently commissioned a variation of the dining suite for the Australian Consulate in Sapporo, Japan. At this exhibition he will be further exploring these sculptural shapes with a number of new pieces unveiled at the Depot Gallery in August 2007. www.contemporaryfurniture.com.au
Richard Crosland
Most of Richards’s time is now devoted to teaching fine woodwork from his workshop in Alexandria, Sydney. The prospect of another Association exhibition has lured him into designing another of his distinctive "mechanical sculptures" for the Design + Wood 2007 exhibition. www.crosland.com.au
Nick Statham
Nick has been making furniture in Australia and overseas since 2000. He spent 3 years working in Germany and Croatia, where he also worked on restoring historic wooden boats. For much of his career he has focused on designing and making chairs. On returning to Australia he was appointed Artist in Residence at Sturt Craft Centre. Philip Gould
Philip graduated from Sturt School for Wood in 2003. After a further two years working for a furniture designer/maker, he established his own workshop in Nowra on the South Coast of NSW. He has participated in a number of exhibitions and craft shows. He has recently completed a project as a presenter in a TV series on fine woodworking. His work is on display in a number of galleries including Bungendore Woodworks, Sturt and Australian Woodwork Galleries. www.philipgould.com.au
John Gallagher
John has been a designer/maker for 3 years as well as a part-time teacher at Sturt School for Wood. He has participated in a number of exhibitions of fine woodwork. John featured with Phil Gould in the recently released TV series on fine woodwork. He has exhibited work at Sturt Galleries. www.piecefurniture.com.au
Paul Nicholson
Paul has been a member of Splinter Workshop, which is a successful co-operative of designer/makers in St Peters, since 2004. Paul has work on display at Sturt Gallery in Mittagong and Bungendore Woodworks. www.splinterworkshop.com.au
Warwick Wright
As Chairman of the Woodworkers Association, Warwick devotes his time between promoting the Association and his woodworking practice in Sydney. He has exhibited in a number of exhibitions since 2004 and his work has been on display Sturt Gallery in Mittagong, Australian Woodwork in the Hunter Valley and Naturally Australian at the Rocks and Bungendore Woodworks. www.grainwoodworks.com.au
Adam Crosland
Adam graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 1994, with some unusual
timber furniture pieces. He teaches Design & Technology at Tempe High School and holds private classes on weekends. This is his first exhibition for 10 years, and has come up with an artistic sculptural concept recycling rare timbers called WoodArt. www.crosland.com.au
David Norrie
David has been a fulltime furniture maker since 2002 when he joined the Splinter Workshop. He enjoys simple forms, elements in proportion and minimal adornment. His pieces integrate other materials, such as stainless steel, to lighten the form and enhance the structural integrity and functionality of pieces. www.splinterworkshop.com.au
Ed Garcia
Ed commenced work as a designer/maker in 1999. His work has spanned one-off commissions for museums to boat and kayak building. He has received wide publicity for his pieces, from magazines such as Australian Wood Review, House & Garden and Australian Interiors, has taken part in several exhibitions and received a NAVA marketing grant. http://www.splinterworkshop.com.au
Chris Watt
Chris is a graduate of Sturt School for Wood and has a background in interior design. He joined Splinter Workshop in 2007 where he hopes to carve out a name for himself as a furniture designer maker. http://www.splinterworkshop.com.au
Tracy Gumm
Tracy is a recent graduate from the Australian School of Fine Furniture in Tasmania. After completing the course in 2006 she has relocated back to Sydney and has set up a furniture studio under the name of Irminsul. She is focusing on building a small range of production pieces and will exhibit some of those at the Design + Wood 2007 exhibit. Ian Factor
Ian recently graduated from the Sturt School of Wood and is now working to establish himself as fulltime designer/maker. His background in architecture and building has influenced his work which is strongly design based, contemporary and functional. He currently has work at Bungendore Gallery and Sturt Gallery.
