Sharpening Edge Tools

Sharpening blades, chisels etc is a continuing issue for beginning tool users and seasoned tradesmen alike.

You receive guidance on sharpening techniques, and the opportunity to go "hands-on" for a wide range of tools and sharpening approaches. Sharpening expert Jim Dave leads this workshop.

Plane Tuning Workshop

Learn how to get the best performance from planes.

Bring your own planes and timber. A good idea is to bring both planes you have tuned for an expert assessment of how you are going, as well as planes you have yet to attack. New planes need tuning as well, so bring those, especially those that don't seem to work "out of the box".

The workshop will include repairs, sole flattening, sharpening and set up. Materials, spare parts and planes will be for sale during the workshop.

Saw Sharpening

Learn how to sharpen saws for efficient hand sawing. This is a hands-on activity in a fully equipped workshop. Each person will have his or her own bench space and vice.

You will:
          joint your saw.
·        use a saw file to shape the teeth.
·        use a saw set to set the teeth.
·        sharpen the teeth using a saw file.
         dress the sides of the teeth with a file or oilstone.

Please note:
All necessary tools will be available.
·        Saw sharpening files will be for sale. You may wish to purchase earlier at Bunnings, a 6" or 7” slim taper is a good start for most saws
·        Please bring your saws for sharpening.
·        For a learning exercise rip or crosscut saws with 4-6 tpi are most appropriate.

If you are looking to buy a saw set, look for the following brands – Eclipse 77, Stanley 42 range, Disston 24. Second hand is the best choice. Some will be available on the day.
